Intro Notes to the Deck & Reading
It feels like many of the readings this month have been dancing around the same issue – our shadows are toying with our emotions, pulling at the strings of what we’ve been able to heal, plucking at our hearts until we finally release the tension that has built up.
Mine has been a magnetic return of my sexual self – something I’ve had trouble containing and hiding to be considered “respectable”. This is not just a reflection of the social conditioning that all of us are struggling with, but particularly for me is a reminder of the prison I placed myself in as a response to all the sexual trauma I have endured. Yet, there is nothing I want more urgently for the world than for us to feel free to be our authentic selves, including our sexual selves. It is that disconnect – between my beliefs and my actions – that has been the primary issue tripping me up all month long.
Our inner monsters are the hard outer shell we had to form to protect our treasured, true selves when things got bad, maybe even before a time we can consciously remember. But, until we release the beauty that is trapped inside, the innocence, the truth, we won’t be able to create the world we deserve. Much like breaking into a geode, we have to crack the outer shell of the monsters we’ve been avoiding to reach the glittering treasure on the inside.
Where We Are This Week
The Devil (R)
Third Eye Chakra
If you’ve been paying attention to anything I’ve written whenever the Devil comes up, you know that I’m a big fan of believing this to be more about our potential to scapegoat others for things we indulge in ourselves. In particular, I think this week we are seeing just how much we cannot avoid facing our culpability. How often do we blame the other side of the duality instead of looking at how we too, tolerate similar chasms within ourselves? How does this translate through our external world too? How often are we pointing the finger to avoid facing the ways it needs to be pointed at us? And worse, what kind of harm have we wrought in doing so? The good news is that in facing this truism about ourselves, we are better capable of healing the rift, which informs us of how to heal the divisions in our outer world.

The Moon
Sacral Chakra
Last week this card appeared reversed as the final advice. Even just finding a space of awareness of how the moon might impact our moods, our outlook, and our experience is a way to work with the natural rhythms of our bodies and how they respond to our closest celestial body. Some will always resist this awareness and want to see “the science”. Let them. Our self-awareness is not dependent on their approval, nor is our emotional state they would be able to track objectively. What I label as “sadness” in my veins might feel more like “depression” or maybe even “normal” in yours. Our words are imperfect to describe the vast landscape of our hearts. Use this time of the waning moon to truly sit with the silence of your heart, the truth of your body, and the vast unknowable within.

You planted your flag, you shot your shot and now you’re left with questions & doubts about your purpose when the result wasn’t quite what you anticipated. Giving up now only sends a mixed signal to the universe about your desires. If you let the lack of progress douse your enthusiasm for the work you are doing. It takes you consistently showing up for your vision for it to happen. Pay attention to areas where you have been making undue comparisons between you and others. Repeating the messages of self-doubt only burrows them deeper into your reality. Your words nourish your intentions, but if all you’re doing is complaining, comparing, and condemning, you’re not building anything new. Stick with your tangible, real-world projects and let them grow with you instead of cursing them for not growing at the same speed as everyone else’s projects.

Notice the fulfilling relationships in your life right now. The ones that are contributing to your well-being, celebrating your successes, showing up to support you in times of need. Notice those who have honored your boundaries and fought by your side. Do not take them for granted by always requiring them to come to you to meet you on your terms. It’s time you start showing up for your squad as well. Show them the same care and community that they are providing you. Even if the world feels too scary to socialize, you need your people and just as importantly, they need you. Now is a good time for a thoughtful gift, a “thinking of you” text, and a genuine show of affection. We all need it right about now.

When push comes to shove, the advantages that people accumulate are not a substitute for courage. All the money in the world won’t help you face yourself in the mirror. All the privilege in the world won’t help you wrestle with the monster within. If anything, it just insulates you from ever having to feel vulnerable. And yet, it is exactly in facing our vulnerability that we come face to face with what true strength looks like. It can only happen on a soul level, a blending of mind, body, and soul into a unifying chord of acceptance. That is the true core of our strength, the true key to unlocking our individual and collective liberation.

One lesson I learned as a divorce mediator was that to get to an agreement, sometimes you had to start with the simplest things. An argument over an $80 difference in child support isn’t always about the money, but rather, about the respect each felt they were owed. Starting with the things they could agree on then builds a foundation for that respect to be demonstrated instead of assumed to be missing. Even the most complex contracts start with the simple “formation of a contract” of offer, acceptance, and agreement. To root out this week’s theme, we must start with the simplest elements, the core components. Take things step by logical step. Do not assume what is or isn’t true – make sure it is. And when it comes to emotions, especially start with “Am I Hungry/Thirsty, Angry, Lonely, Tired?” – solve those problems first before you start drilling into the rest.
Undercurrents
Queen of Pentacles (R)
Heart Chakra
Last week we had the King of Pentacles pop up as a surprise, enterprising guest star in the undercurrent. This week, we have all the appearance of kindness with all the intention of tripping us up. I’m getting a big whiff of jealousy souring the waters. While we may be on the receiving end of this energy, given that comparison and self-doubt came up, it’s a good idea to do a self-inventory to ensure we’re not the ones pissing in someone else’s Cheerios. Remember, jealousy is more like a symptom of other emotions, like sadness, anger, powerlessness, disgust, remorse, or rejection, just to name a few. Look for the “sponsoring” wound and address that instead.
Final Advice
Seven of Pentacles (R)
Crown Chakra
I get the impulse to just give up. To go get a “real job”. To pinch your nose and swallow the Big Pharma medicine. But as the guardian of this new calling, this new vision, you are the only protection that this little idea has. Without you, it will never grow the roots it needs to survive and take on its own life. The wise leader recognizes that there has been a fracturing of our reality, which includes the timelines where everything is arriving. A good leader resists the temptation to cut corners and speed up delivery because it will only weaken the quality of what is grown. No, we have to stick with the process, through good times & bad, using the feedback to refine, not refuse the calling we’ve been given.
Parting words from a Geek Empress
Even though there is much ground to cover with the disconnect we might see in ourselves, the fracture extends beyond us. The external push and pull of our values vs our patterns has us torn in new directions too. We see a tremendous disconnect between what is said and what is done. Politicians and professionals gaslighting us, both using and ignoring the state of our democracy and denying what we see happening in front of our eyes every day. If this were the Wizard of Oz we’d be pulling back the curtain to reveal the trick for what it is…
How many conspiracies are flying about who is pulling those strings, operating that machinery? And curiously enough, no matter who you ask, it always seems to be a circuitous way to confirm their pre-existing beliefs instead of truly opening their minds and hearts to “the truth”. It’s always fun to watch them twist themselves into pretzel knots to rationalize why their preferred scapegoated groups are the ones “behind everything”. We want a villain to blame.
But the problem is once we get down to the center of things, we will just find a giant mirror. And because we cannot face that kind of complicity, we project whoever we want onto that face – make them the enemy, we superimpose a bad guy. That’s the problem with a whole society invested in keeping us from understanding that aspect of ourselves – the Devil has always been us.
But so has God. For we also cast the best of ourselves into the will of the divine. The concept of God carries our righteousness, our courage, our love. But it is only when we reckon with both sides of ourselves, our naturally occurring duality, that an entirely new vision can rise to the surface, one that is interconnected, compassionate, informed, and integrated beyond the self. Only then do we have the power to create our new reality in real-time.

Registration is now open for the Spark the Heart Network group. The first meeting is on June 25, via Zoom.
The first topic we’ll be covering is So you have a calling…now what?!
- What is it?
- A virtual monthly support & networking membership group for soul-centered activists, leaders & helpers.
- Members can sign up to present at a quarterly skillshare meeting to learn about each others’ experiences, services, and backgrounds to better exchange information and referrals.
- The vision is to grow it into a framework that can support fundraising, volunteers, or resourcing for members’ mutual aid projects and outside charities nominated and voted on by the group at large.
- Why is it needed?
- Speaking from experience, we all need a place to regroup when the world gets to be too much. When disinformation has us doubting our knowledge systems makes us doubt our worth. Double that for anyone who works with vulnerable communities.
- This is a space for sensitive souls to Let go of the hurt, gather our strength, straighten our crowns, and get back to the radical love we are here to give.
- Who is this group designed for?
- Those who have personal or professional experience as a community healer, activist, navigator, service provider, or leader?
- Those who consider themselves heart-centered or soul-led in describing their approach to the world.
- Anyone who feels called to contribute their skills to building a more loving world
- Those looking to expand their network of caring souls who don’t ignore the suffering of the world, but also need support in responding to it.
